CHAIRMAN

Lord Carter of Barnes CBE

Appointed Governor in April 2005 and Chairman in July 2007.

Stephen A. Carter is the Chief Marketing, Strategy and Communications Officer of Alcatel-Lucent Inc, and is a member of the Executive Management Committee.

He has held a variety of Senior Executive roles in the Media and Telecommunications industry including the founding Chief Executive of Ofcom (the UK Communications Regulator); Managing Director of NTL UK & Ireland; and he has also been the Chief Executive of two marketing service businesses - J. Walter Thompson UK Limited and the Brunswick Group LLP.

Most recently he served as the Minister in the UK Government for the Communications, Technology & Broadcasting Sector, where he was the author of the Digital Britain Report, and the follow on Digital Economy Act 2010.

He is a law graduate from Aberdeen University, and also completed the HBS AMP.

He is a Past Chairman of the Marketing Group of Great Britain, and has served on the Board of a number of companies. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Ashridge Business School.

Stephen was awarded a CBE for services to the Communications Industry, and is a Life Peer.

Appointed Governor in 2000 and Vice-Chairman in July 2006.

Chairman, International Power since October 2000; Chairman of the BRE Trust; Chairman of Adelie Food Holdings Ltd; Chairman of Equiniti (formerly Lloyds TSB Registrars).

Previously: Chairman, Carillion plc; Chairman of the Government’s Sustainable Procurement Task Force; Co-Chairman of the Members Assembly of Transmanche Link; Non-executive Chairman, Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman of Tarmac plc; Member of the Court of the Bank of England; Chairman of the New Deal Task Force for the Construction Industry; Member, President’s Committee of the CBI; Chairman of the Operating Partners of Duke Street Capital.

Mr Trevor Bish-Jones

Appointed Governor in July 2003.

Former CEO of Woolworths Group plc January 2002 – July 2008.

Trevor has been a Non-Exec Director of Royal London since October 2005 and also sits on the Board of the British Retail Consortium.

Trevor is a pharmacy graduate. Prior to his retail career was a research chemist in the oil industry. His initial move into retail was with the Boots Company plc where he progressed from Store Manager through a variety of buying and marketing roles.

He was employed for 8 years by Dixons Stores Group where he held positions including Managing Director of Currys, Dixons, The Link and Commercial Director of PC World.

Trevor is also a Fellow of the Marketing Society.

Professor Michael Clarke

Professor Michael Clarke CBE

Appointed Governor in July 2010.

Born in Yorkshire, he started his academic career at the University of Edinburgh as Director of Studies prior to joining Lothian Regional Council in 1975, later becoming Deputy Director, Policy Planning. Moving South in 1981, he headed the Local Government Management Board and advised a number of parliamentary Select Committees. A Member of the General Synod of the Church of England since 1990, he is also a Lay Canon and a Member of the Chapter of Worcester Cathedral. In 1998 he became Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham University, being appointed Vice Principal in 2003. Previously Head of the Russell Group he is reported as a staunch advocate of tuition top-up fees as contributing to the vital need for greater Higher Education funding.

Geoff Cooper

Mr Geoff Cooper

Appointed Governor in July 2008.

Chief Executive: Travis Perkins plc; Non-Executive Chairman: Dunelm Group plc

Mr Cooper is a chartered management accountant and worked in management consultancy before joining Gateway (now Somerfield plc) as Finance Director in 1990. In 1994 he became Finance Director of UniChem plc, subsequently Alliance UniChem plc (which later took over Boots plc to become part of Alliance Boots plc), where he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2001.

Professor Dame Sally Davies

Appointed Governor in April 2006.

Director General of Research and Development for the Department of Health and NHS.

Professor Dame Davies has been actively involved in NHS R&D from its establishment. Professor Davies led the UK delegations to the WHO Ministerial Summit in November 2004 and November 2008, is on the WHO Advisory Committee on Health Research, and chaired the external advisory group to the WHO on their Research Strategy Development.

In the 2009 New Year's Honours List, Sally was awarded a DBE for Services to Medicine.

Karen Jones CBE

Appointed Governor in July 2005.

Chairman, Food and Fuel Ltd; Non-executive Director, HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland) and Royal National Theatre Enterprises. Karen also chairs the Remuneration Committee of HBOS and the Rebuilding Childhoods Board of the NSPCC.

Previously: Chief Executive of Spirit Group Ltd, a 2000 strong pub and restaurant group. Karen is a very successful retailer with a strong track record of growing and managing businesses. She founded and developed both Café Rouge and the Pelican Group plc.

Previous Non-Executive Director roles include Gondola Holdings plc and Emap plc.

Formerly Chairman: English Partnerships Pension Scheme (in 2008 English Partnerships became part of the Housing and Communities Agency); General Secretary, International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (1995-2001); President, Amalgamated Engineering & Electrical Union (1986-95); Member: TUC General Council and major committees (1986-95), National Economic Development Council (NEDC) (1986-92), Engineering Training Authority (1991-95), English Partnerships 1993-2003; Governor, London School of Economics 1987-2002, Manchester Business School (1987-92) and BBC (1988-98); Member Court of Governors, Henley College. .

Professor Roland Kaye

Appointed Governor in April 2005.

Chair in Management Accounting at the University of East Anglia having previously been Dean of the Open University Business School.

Former President of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Professor Kaye has also served on the executive of the Association of Business Schools and as adviser to the Chartered Management Institute.

Jim Leng

Mr James Leng

Appointed Governor in July 2008.

Non-Executive Director, Alstom SA and TNK-BP. Senior Advisor to HSBC and Governor, National Institute of Economic and Social Research. Mr Leng is also Chairman, European Advisory Board of AEA Investors and Chairman, Doncasters Group Limited.

Mr Leng joined the Board of Corus Group plc in 2001 and in 2003 was appointed Chairman. Following its takeover in 2007 by Tata Steel Limited, Mr Leng became Deputy Chairman of Tata Steel of India until July 2009.

Previously Mr Leng was CEO, Laporte plc and CEO, Low and Bonar plc. Mr Leng has also served on the boards of Hanson PLC, Pilkington plc, JP Morgan Fleming Mid Cap Investment Trust plc and IMI plc. Earlier in his career he held a senior position with John Waddington Ltd.

Mr Graham Mackay

Appointed Governor in 2003.

Graham Mackay joined SAB in 1978 and has held a number of senior positions in the SABMiller Group, including Executive Chairman of the beer business in South Africa. He was appointed SABMiller Group Managing Director in 1997 and Chief Executive of South African Breweries plc upon its listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1999. He is the Senior Non-Executive Director of Reckitt Benckiser Group plc and joined the board of directors of Philip Morris International Inc in 2008.

Sir Richard Mottram

Sir Richard Mottram

Appointed Governor in 1998.

Governor and Council Member of the Ditchley Foundation.

From 1992-2007, Sir Richard held a number of posts at the top of the Civil Service, most recently Permanent Secretary, Intelligence, Security and Resilience and Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, Cabinet Office.

Prior to this, Sir Richard was successively the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and the Office of Public Service and Science, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions the Department for Work and Pensions.

Sir Richard is a past President of the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management.

Chris Sullivan

Mr Chris Sullivan

Appointed Governor in July 2010.

Chris joined the Lombard Group from school in 1975, being appointed Head of Group Training & Development in 1991. Subsequent roles included National Sales Director, Managing Director and then Chief Executive for five years. Moving to RBS he became Chief Executive of Retail Markets and then of RBS Insurance prior to his appointment as Chief Executive of the UK Corporate Banking Division in August 2009. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, he is also Chairman of the General Insurance Council and a member of the CBI Presidents Committee.
